SOUSA MENDES FOUNDATION US RECEIVES $25,000 GRANT FROM THE CONFERENCE ON JEWISH MATERIAL CLAIMS AGAINST GERMANY
The Sousa Mendes Foundation, founded in 2010, has been engaged in a worldwide search for recipients of life-saving visas issued in 1940 by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, Portuguese Consul-General in Bordeaux, France. We recently received exciting news.
The Foundation was awarded a grant of $25,000 by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) in support of this work.
“Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a courageous and sympathetic man who used his influential government position to save thousands of Jewish lives,” said Claims Conference Chairman Julius Berman. “We proudly support an organization that was co-founded by descendants of the rescuer and those he rescued. What a testament to the circle of life.”
As this is a matching grant, the Sousa Mendes Foundation must raise another $25,000 in order to collect the full amount of the award.
“Our efforts to research and document what happened to the visa recipients will be greatly enhanced by the grant we have been awarded by the Claims Conference,” says Louis-Philippe Mendes, President of the Sousa Mendes Foundation and grandson of Aristides de Sousa Mendes. “Each one of these stories is further proof that the Holocaust is undeniable and that acts of rescue were necessary.”
Please help us continue this urgent work.
The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) represents world Jewry in negotiating for compensation and restitution for victims of Nazi persecution and their heirs. The Claims Conference administers compensation funds, recovers unclaimed Jewish property, and allocates funds to institutions that provide social welfare services to Holocaust survivors and that preserve the memory and lessons of the Shoah.
The Sousa Mendes Foundation is honored to preserve the memory and lessons of the Shoah.
Founded in 2010, the Sousa Mendes Foundation is dedicated to honoring the memory of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and to educating the public about refugees and rescue during the Holocaust. Named “Organization of the Year” in 2012 by The Portuguese Tribune, the Sousa Mendes Foundation has a twofold mission: raising funds for the creation of a Sousa Mendes Museum and Human Rights Center and sponsoring projects that teach the importance of moral courage in a civilized world.
Please make a generous contribution today to help us meet our goal of raising the $25,000 match. Thank you for your support!
