(see English version below)

Compare and contrast:

(C) hallah is a special bread made with eggs and sugar that Jews eat on Saturdays, and on Jewish holy days. It is usually made with dough plaited in a braid  he pieces are "separated" by the people present at the celebration.

Another very similar bread is Portuguese Sweet Bread  a very common type of bread in Portugal, Brazil and the communities of the Portuguese Diaspora, whose recipe varies according to its origins.  In the Azores it is known as Massa Sovada, (kneaded dough)  and the recipe was taken by emigrants to distant lands like Hawaii. The version of Folar da Páscoa is present in all Portuguese tables at Easter and often during the year.

Compare and contrast:
While the Jewish Challah bread is usually presented in a long braid, the Portuguese Folar da Páscoa  is made in the round with eggs in the center. The eggs are covered with dough in the shape of a cross, should the the neighbors have any doubts about the family's religious background. After the forced conversion during the reign of King Manuel I   in the sixteenth century, many Portuguese Jewish families, the Marranos, kept their Jewish traditions in secret to escape the persecution of the Inquisition.

Fortunately, in the XXI  century we can enjoy family celebrations with this delicious bread in various ways, even with colorful eggs left in the garden  by a passing Easter Bunny!

Celebrating  family, that is the best part of the tradition!
