2024 Dia Mundial dos Refugiados e a inauguração do Museu Sousa Mendes

Os nossos agradecimentos à Dra Odete Paiva, Diretora do Museu Grão Vasco e à empresa SCABAL por esta oportunidade de falar da ação de salvamento de Aristides de Sousa Mendes que tocou tantas vidas, como a de Gala e Salvador Dali em 20 de Junho de 1940.

A autora Ana Cristina Luz falou do seu livro sobre as personalidades da cultura que receberam vistos de Aristides de Sousa Mendes, que ajuda a contrariar o esquecimento daqueles tempos tenebrosos.

Cookie van den Bergh Fischer falou de como veio a saber da história da chegada da sua mãe ao porto de Leixões a bordo do buque Milena, também graças ao visto de Aristides de Sousa Mendes. 

A professora e artista plástica Josefa Reis falou do Projeto Dever de Memória que envolve os alunos da Escola Aristides de Sousa Mendes em Cabanas de Viriato.

Eu falei dos contatos que a Sousa Mendes Foundation - US tem feito desde 2010 junto das famílias que encontraram refúgio em Portugal em 1940. Muitos descendentes estão agora a recuperar as memórias da família. Alguns vão assistir à inauguração do Museu Aristides de Sousa Mendes a 19 de Julho 2024, na Casa do Passal, em Cabanas de Viriato.

Neste Dia Mundial dos Refugiados, milhares de pessoas voltam a fugir da guerra, da perseguição, da pobreza e até das alterações climáticas. Impedir a deslocação dos refugiados é como tentar “parar o vento com os dedos”. Compete-nos conhecer a realidade dos refugiados de hoje e fazermos por ser parte da solução, pelo acolhimento, pela tolerância, pelo apoio nos momentos críticos e pela inclusão.

Our thanks to Odete Paiva, Director of the Grão Vasco Museum and the company SCABAL for this opportunity to talk about the rescue action of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who touched so many lives, including those of Gala and Salvador Dali on June 20, 1940.

Author Ana Cristina Luz spoke of her book about the cultural personalities who received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes. Writing and speaking of the importance of good deeds in the darkest of times, helps to counteract the forgetting.

Cookie van den Bergh Fischer spoke about how she came to know the story of her mother's arrival at the port of Leixões aboard the fishing boat Milena with her cousins, also thanks to visas by Aristides de Sousa Mendes.

Teacher and artist Josefa Reis spoke about the Duty of Memory Project that involves students at the Aristides de Sousa Mendes School in Cabanas de Viriato.

I spoke about the contacts that the Sousa Mendes Foundation - US has made since 2010 with families who found refuge in Portugal in 1940. Many descendants are now restoring their family memories. Some will attend the inauguration of the Aristides de Sousa Mendes Museum on July 19, 2024, at Casa do Passal, in Cabanas de Viriato, Carregal do Sal.

On this June 20^th, World Refugee Day, thousands of people are once again fleeing war, persecution, poverty and even climate change. Preventing the movement of refugees is like trying to “stop the wind with your fingers”. It is up to us to understand the reality of the refugees of today and to become part of the solution, through our own  acceptance, tolerance, support in critical moments and inclusion.

The events of June 1940t made all the difference for thousands of refugee families fleeing from the Nazi invasion, for the resistance of France, and for the mobilization of the allied forces of freedom which eventually prevailed in World War II. 

On this Day of Conscience, we remember the courage of Aristides de Sousa Mendes,  83 years ago, who decided to follow his conscience and try to "save all those people whose affliction was indescribable"with the help of 

Rabbi Chaim Kruger, the consular staff and his family.

NEVER FORGET the suffering of the victims. 

Always remember the rescue actions and the 

moral imperative of the rescuers 

who followed their conscience in the face of 

great danger and unknown risks.

This was also the week that Paris was over-run and the Government of France retreated to Bordeaux.   On 16-June, General Charles de Gaulle left Bordeaux for London, from where he made a broadcast on BBC radio calling on the French to resist the Nazi invasion, on 18-June-1940.

ASM visa dated 28-May - Moed family visited Casa do Passal in 2013

The MOED family received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on May 28, 1940.

They crossed into Portugal, where they lived in Porto. They sailed on the Nea Hellas from Lisbon to New York in September 1940.

Leon MOED received a visa from Aristides de Sousa Mendes on May 28, 1940.

He went on to become and architect in the US.

In 2013, his grandson Eric Moed created an award-winning installation in Casa do Passal, Work Towards Fairness, opened in the presence of a visitors organized by the Sousa Mendes Foundation-US in the Journey on the Road to Freedom, including other ASM Visa families, Sousa Mendes family members, local officials and the public. Casa do Passal was then in ruins, and restoration began the following year.

Famílias de refugiados recordam a data do Visto de Aristides como o dia da libertação

Para as famílias que procuravam urgentemente escapar à invasão Nazi em 1940, o dia em que Aristides de Sousa Mendes lhes concedeu o visto de entrada para Portugal foi o momento de viragem na sua história, o dia da sua libertação. 

Com a tão desejada assinatura podiam passar a olhar para a frente e para a sua nova vida com segurança e esperança em vez de continuar a olhar para traz com incerteza e pavor. 

Eis algumas das famílias que comemoram esta semana o seu Dia da Libertação esta semana de 21-Maio e que já voltaram a visitar Portugal  

A família KAUFMANN e Friedrich KOCH receberam vistos de Aristides de Sousa Mendes em Bordéus a 24 de maio de 1940. Estes vistos foram explicitamente negados por Salazar, o chefe de Estado português. atravessaram para Portugal, onde residiam em Caldas da Rainha. 

Max KAUFMANN e Friedrich KOCH voaram de Lisboa para Nova York no Dixie Clipper em outubro de 1940.Grete KAUFMANN e seus filhos Annelies e Hans embarcaram no navio Siboney de Lisboa para Nova York em dezembro de 1940.

A família ROZENFELD, de Lodz, na Polônia, recebeu vistos de Aristides de Sousa Mendes em Bordeaux, na França, em 24 de maio de 1940.

Eles cruzaram para Portugal, onde residiram em Lisboa. Em julho de 1940, eles navegaram para Nova York no navio Nea Hellas.

Em 1945, eles foram naturalizados como cidadãos americanos.

Giving Forward: Um bom Legado pode ser Replicado

The extraordinary Legacy of Aristides de Sousa Mendes has been replicated by the life's work of many of the people he saved, like Jean-Claude van Italie. 

Even though we are far away in Angelina's village in central Portugal, we are pleased to read of the work of the Shantigar Foundation which is devoted to the practices of meditation, theater of sacred intent, and engagement with nature—and discovering where these practices meet.

Shantigar Foundation is continuing the work of its founder Jean-Claude van Italie,1936-2021, an ASM visa recipient who was  only 4-years old  when he and his family received life-saving visas to Portugal from Aristides de Sousa Mendes, and thus were able to leave France one step ahead of the invaders.

"Jean-Claude van Itallie, born in Brussels, Belgium,   fled the Holocaust with his family. He was raised in Great Neck, New York and attended Harvard University. In the early 1960s, Jean-Claude’s work was seminal in the revolutionary new theater in Greenwich Village. He was one of LaMama’s first playwrights and served as playwright-of-the-ensemble for Joe Chaikin's Open Theater, with whom he wrote The Serpent.

In 1977, Jean-Claude invited his Tibetan Buddhist teacher, Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, to retreated at his farm in Western Massachusetts to write his renowned Shambala teachings. Trungpa renamed the farm, "Shantigar," which means "Peaceful Home." Jean-Claude subsequently turned Shantigar into a not-for-profit foundation."

Hidden children, who depended on their rescuers, may have difficulty in re-bonding with their natural parents.  Children have a limited number of bonding potentials. 

Rescuers risked their whole families not just their own lives.

REFÚGIO, MIGRAÇÃO E HOLOCAUSTO, 1936- 1945: A COLEÇÃO DE VISTOS DO ARQUIVO DIPLOMÁTICO E UMA COLEÇÃO FOTOGRÁFICA DA CRUZ VERMELHA PORTUGUESA    Relatório Final 4 de abril 2022 

O projeto de classificação e digitalização dos Vistos do Arquivo Diplomático e da Coleção Fotográfica da Cruz Vermelha  disponibiliza  um recurso fundamental na compreensão das trajetórias de refugiados e de outras populações durante a II Guerra Mundial. Estamos em presença de informação valiosa também no contexto da genealogia e história familiar. 

Adicionalmente, reflete também a situação do governo português perante a guerra e a sua política face à entrada de estrangeiros em Portugal, assim como permite melhor conhecer a ação de Aristides de Sousa Mendes e dos outros Cônsules portugueses em face das instruções recebidas, tanto dos serviços centrais do Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros como da polícia política. 

Através de uma completa descrição de todos os processos de pedidos de visto foi possível criar uma base de dados com os nomes de todos os requerentes de vistos portugueses durante Segunda Guerra Mundial. A utilização desta informação permitirá, em futuros estudos de investigação rastrear o destino dos refugiados, em especial dos judeus, que escaparam ao genocídio, ou daqueles a quem o visto foi recusado e que acabaram em campos nazis.  

Por outro lado, este projeto permitiu apresentar um espólio de especial importância para o conhecimento da vida dos refugiados em Lisboa, o Arquivo Fotográfico da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa, que mantem uma estreita relação com a coleção de vistos da Repartição dos Assuntos Consulares do MNE e a coleção fotográfica da CVP. Refira-se a título de exemplo que os álbuns da CVP ilustram a troca de prisioneiros e a troca de civis, incluindo fotografias de prisioneiros e dos navios Gripsholm e SS Drottningholm, existindo no Arquivo Diplomático processos de pedidos de visto para delegados do Comité Internacional da Cruz Vermelha que auxiliam a troca de prisioneiros. Foram também localizados processos relativos a prisioneiros de guerra, como é o caso da troca de prisioneiros britânicos e alemães, bem como a troca de civis.  

Toda os objetos digitais e respetivos metadados estão agora disponíveis através do catálogo do Arquivo Diplomático. Este pode ser acedido através da internet pelos utilizadores do arquivo do Instituto Diplomático e pelo público em geral.

A city square in Jerusalem has been named in memory of the Portuguese diplomat and Holocaust rescuer Aristides de Sousa Mendes, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of his daring rescue in 1940 of thousands of Jews, while serving as the Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, France. This memorial action is thanks to the efforts of the historian Dr. Mordecai Paldiel who serves on the Board of the Sousa Mendes Foundation and who was previously the Director of the Department for the Righteous at Yad Vashem.xxxxx 

A public ceremony marking the unveiling of the street sign had been planned for June 2020 but is postponed to a future date to be determined.  The street sign is in Hebrew, Arabic and English, and reads: “Aristides de Sousa Mendes Square, Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux (France), saved thousands of Jews during the years 1939-40.”

Dr. Paldiel stated, “Sousa Mendes is one of a group of diplomats honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations for helping Jews avoid deportation by granting them visas to other countries. However, he stands out from others as the only one who disobeyed direct and clear orders from his superiors not to grant such visas to Jewish refugees, and was consequently severely punished by immediate dismissal from his diplomatic post. He remains an example of what a difference one person can make in the pursuit of goodness, and therefore, an inspiration to present and future generations. I would like to thank the Jerusalem municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Moshe Lion, for bestowing upon Sousa Mendes a place of honor within this historic city.”

Other anniversary events took place earlier this month. On June 9th, the Portuguese Parliament voted unanimously to induct Sousa Mendes into the National Pantheon. This action was significant, as Sousa Mendes died in 1954 after having been disgraced and punished by the Portuguese government of his time. On June 17th, 2020 Pope Francis invoked the memory of Sousa Mendes and his action to declare that date to be henceforth considered as the “Day of Conscience.”

The Sousa Mendes Foundation was established in 2010 to perpetuate the memory of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and to educate the public about refugees and rescue during the Holocaust. Named “Organization of the Year” in 2012 by The Portuguese Tribune, the Sousa Mendes Foundation is engaged in a worldwide search for families who escaped the Holocaust through Portugal.  The Foundation has a two-fold mission: raising funds for the creation of a Sousa Mendes Museum and Site of Conscience and sponsoring projects that teach the importance of moral courage in a civilized world.
