Voyage-souvenir en France en juin 2010 organisé par le Comité national français en hommage à Aristides de Sousa Mendes

Le Comité national français en hommage à Aristides de Sousa Mendes a organisé un voyage-souvenir de descendants de Sousa Mendes et de descendants des personnes sauvées par lui, en France, à l’occasion du 70e anniversaire de son action de Conscience.
Ce voyage se déroulera du 21 au 26 juin 2010, à Paris, Bordeaux, Bayonne, Anglet et Hendaye, avec un programme programme de différents hommages prévus:

Descendentes de Sousa Mendes e de refugiados que ele salvou realizam Viagem de Memória de Paris a Bordéus e Hendaia, organizada pelo Comité Sousa Mendes francês.

Uma viagem anterior em 2007 (ver imagem acima) seguiu o caminho da esperança dos refugiados até Portugal, incluindo paragens na fronteira de Vilar Formoso, Beijós, Cabanas de Viriato e Lisboa.
Descendants of Sousa Mendes and of the refugees he saved are making a Memorial Voyage from Paris to Bordeaux, to Hendaye, organized by the French Sousa Mendes Committee. A similar memorial trip in 2007 followed the refugee routes of hope to Portugal, to the frontier at Vilar Formoso, to Sousa Mendes's home town Cabanas de Viriato, and to Lisbon.

The Little Prince, the fictional character that has charmed readers over the decades, is a rather appropriate "spokesperson" for the Human Rights Education Initiciative promoted by UNRIC.

After all, his creator, Antoine Saint-Exupéry, was a refugee in Lisbon, Portugal during World War II, where he wrote "Letter to a Hostage".

We live in a world full of displaced people. War, famine, disease, and economics have forced millions if not billions of people to leave their homes. While some are fortunate enough to be allowed to immigrate to new countries where they have the chance to start over again, others end up in the squalor and helplessness of refugee camps. Trapped in bureaucratic limbo as no country is willing to accept them and unable to go home, they live on hand outs and take shelter in anything from tents to edifices made of scrap.
Limbo or purgatory can't be any worse than the fate of those doomed to spend their days whiling away the hours awaiting word that they can return to their homes or by some miracle be allowed into another country. If that isn't a troubling enough fate, what of those who have family and friends to worry about? As long as no word comes saying they have died, they continue to remain alive as long as they are remembered. Those memories are the one thing they retain that assures them their life before this was real, and the people they left behind are all that's left of whatever it was that once rooted them to their homeland.
In 1940, when most of Europe had fallen under the shadow of Nazi Germany, Portugal remained unoccupied and fiercely neutral. Located at the far end of the Iberian peninsula and buffered from the rest of Europe by Spain, little Portugal became the last place of refuge for people fleeing Nazi Germany hoping to obtain a visa that would take them across the water to the United States, Canada, or South America. Whether living under Nazi rule was unacceptable to them or life threatening made no difference, as the result was the same. Standing on the edge of the continent looking across the ocean towards potential salvation, their only recourse was to wait.
Among those waiting was French aviator and author Antoine De Saint-Exupery who is perhaps best known for his children's book Le Petite Prince - The Little Prince. After the fall of France he refused to live in Nazi occupied France and made his way to America so he could continue to fight. Like so many others he ended up in Portugal waiting for a visa, and it was during his time in Portugal among fellow refugees that he was inspired to write the essay Letter To A Hostage, which is now being re-issued by Pushkin Press of London, England.
Unlike the refugees of today who are resigned to the hopelessness of their situation, the majority of those waiting in Lisbon acted no differently than they would have if they were on vacation in the south of France or other resort area. On the whole these were people who had the where with all to have bought their way out of whatever troubles they might have experienced in their homeland. Once ensconced in Lisbon they proceeded to live as if their circumstances remained unchanged, dressing up every night and going to the casinos or attending lavish dinner parties.

Of course it was all pretence, or as Saint-Exupery puts it: "As Lisbon played at happiness, they (the refugees) played at pretending they would return"(to their homelands)

Financiamento promove parcerias para o turismo

As 11 ERT, Entidades Regionais de Turismo, incluindo a Turismo Centro de Portugal, receberam financianciamentos adicionais do instituto Turismo de Portugal em contratos assinados a 16-Outubro-2009. O Turismo do Centro de Portugal vai receber quase 2,3 milhões de euros.

Segundo comunicou o Turismo de Portugal, esta é a última etapa da reorganização da gestão das áreas de turismo, e representa um mecanismo de estímulo à participação dos agentes públicos e privados no desenvolvimento dos destinos turísticos locais e regionais. O sector necessita de estabelecer parcerias para ganhar sinergias e racionalizar custos, a fim de reforçar a animação, promoção e comunicação dos destinos.

As ERT’s poderão ver reforçadas as suas dotações nos anos seguintes, se conseguirem cumprir ou superar as metas pre-definidadas. A dotação foi distribuída entre as ERT e polos turísticos, incluindo o da Serra da Estrela, com base em critérios como o número de concelhos, camas turísticas, dormidas e dimensão do território.

Pedro Machado, presidente do Turismo Centro de Portugal, considerou que "somos uma região muito vasta, com diversos produtos turísticos consolidados, que necessita de uma discriminação positiva”.

A casa do Passal de Aristides de Sousa Mendes em Cabanas de Viriato poderia fazer parte de uma rota dos heróis, pelas terras de Viriato e do Infante D.Henrique que foi o 1º Duque de Viseu.

Livro infantíl conta história da fuga de Curious George

Hans e Margret Rey, os artistas judeus-alemães que criaram as histórias do Curious George, receberam vistos de Sousa Mendes em 1940 e escaparam da França para Portugal em bicicleta.
H. A. e Margaret Rey nasceram na Alemanha mas conheceram-se e casaram no Brasil. De volta à Europa, viram-se obrigados a fugir em 2 bicletas que conseguiram montar de partes diversas.

No livro de Louise Borden, The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey, pode ver-se a imagem do Consulado de Portugal e a bandeira portuguesa, bem como as imagens das ruas e porto de Lisboa.

Neste livro infantil, as crianças podem ficar a conhecer um dos períodos mais dramáticos da história mundial. Ao mesmo tempo, podem aprender como a força e a determinação ajudam os refugiados a sobreviverem e manterem o seu optimismo e criatividade.

O boneco de peluche Curious George é um macaquinho curioso que faz as delícias de milhares de crianças em todo o mundo e que agora serve para ensinar os mais pequenos.

Hans and Margret Rey, the creators of Curious George, the popular children's character, were German-born jews who received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux in 1940. They made their way to Portugal on bicycles and lived to create numerous stories to the delight of children the world over.

The pages of the book No by Louise Borden, The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey, show images of the refugees fleeing Paris and massing in Bordeaux on the riverfront by the Consulate of Portugal. The Portuguese flag was a portent of hope to those determined to escape and make their way to Portugal and to port of Lisbon

Vilar Formoso recebeu familiares nos passos de Sousa Mendes

Três gerações de descendentes de Aristides de Sousa Mendes, incluindo a sua filha Marie-Rose Faure na foto, juntaram-se para fazer uma "reunião de família sobre rodas" e recriar o caminho dos refugiados salvos por Sousa Mendes, de Bordéus até Lisboa.

Os familiares de Sousa Mendes foram recebidos em Bordeaux em 16 e 17 Junho, visitaram os locais dos antigos consulados portugueses em Bordeaus e Bayonne, e participaram uma caminhada de velas em Hendaye

Depois de atrevessar a Espanha, o grupo transpôs a fronteira em Vilar Formoso ao cair da noite de 19-Junho, onde tiveram uma recepção emocionante na estação de comboio que fez recordar a chegada a bom porto dos milhares de refugiados que ali entraram em 1940.

A recepção foi feita por representantes das Câmaras Municipais de Almeida e Trancoso e da Região de Turismo da Serra da Estrêla, bem como representantes da Comunidade Judaica de Belmonte.

A comitiva assistiu a uma missa a 20-Junho, Dia Mundial dos Refugiados, em Cabanas de Viriato, seguindo depois para Coimbra e Lisboa, tal como fizeram os muitos refugiados em busca do porto de Lisboa e da liberdade prometida.
