Hans and Margret Rey, the creators of Curious George, the popular children's character, were German-born jews who received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux in 1940. They made their way to Portugal on bicycles and lived to create numerous stories to the delight of children the world over.The pages of the book No by Louise Borden, The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey, show images of the refugees fleeing Paris and massing in Bordeaux on the riverfront by the Consulate of Portugal. The Portuguese flag was a portent of hope to those determined to escape and make their way to Portugal and to port of Lisbon
