Informam-se todos os amigos da “Causa” Aristides de Sousa Mendes que, depois de ponderadas a condições climatéricas previstas para a noite do próximo Sábado, dia 27 de Junho, foi decidido alterar o Local de realização do anunciado Concerto de Música de Câmara dos Solistas da Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, das escadarias da Casa do Passal, para a IGREJA PAROQUIAL de Cabanas de Viriato, mantendo-se a data e a hora.

Mais se informa que, apenas estão disponíveis 25 (vinte e cinco bilhetes) para ingresso na Igreja Paroquial, bilhetes estes que poderão ser levantados, por ordem presencial e à razão de 2 bilhetes por pessoa, na Secretaria da Junta de Freguesia de Cabanas de Viriato, deixando a respectiva identificação (nome, morada e contacto) dos utilizadores dos respectivos títulos de entrada.

Informa-se ainda que o Concerto será transmitido em directo pelo Facebook através de link a disponibilizar posteriormente.

SMF US convida a celebrar Aristides com o Poder da Música, Domingo, 28-Junho

SMF US Virtual event: The Power of Music

June 28 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm EST 

Music has the unique power to transport an individual outside of the here and now.  This event is a demonstration of that power.  We will begin by watching the Oscar-winning short documentary film The Lady in Number 6 — Music Saved My Life (38 minutes) about the extraordinary life of concert pianist and Holocaust survivor Alice Herz Sommer.  Then we will be treated to a musical response to this tender and touching film by singers Cantor Arianne Brown and Stephan Kirchgraber and composer/pianist Neely Bruce.  Not to be missed!

Tickets are by donation of any amount. The event is a fundraiser, with a portion of the proceeds going to refugee assistance. Our designated grantee is the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), the oldest refugee aid organization in the world.  We suggest a minimum donation of $36 per household, but please give more if you can or less if you need to.  All tickets by donation  are 100% tax-deductible.

MEET THE MUSICIANS

Cantor Arianne Brown, Carnival, Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, Hope in Anything Goes, Luisa in The Fantasticks, and Zorah in Ruddigore. Opera credits include roles in Carmen, The Marriage of Figaro, and Amelia Goes to the Ball. Arianne was proud to produce and perform in the premiere of highlights from Neely Bruce’s Circular 14: The Apotheosis of Aristides for Adas Israel’s Garden of the Righteous ceremony. Arianne is married to Rabbi Randy Brown and is the proud Ima of three little boys.

of Adas Israel Congregation in Washington DC, was invested as a Hazzan and received a Master of Arts in Sacred Music from the Jewish Theological Seminary.  She has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Safra Hall, Disney Hall, the Krakow Jewish Music Festival, and Warsaw’s Ida Kaminska State Theatre. She sang the national anthem at Dodger Stadium and the Kodak Theater for President Obama’s Jewish Heritage address and for Prime Minister Netanyahu.  Theater roles include Lili in

Composer/pianist Neely Bruce is the John Spencer Camp Professor of Music at Wesleyan University. He is the composer of over 800 works, including operas, oratorios and other choral music, orchestral works, solo songs, seven documentary scores for public television, and some 14 hours of solo piano music. He is the only pianist to have accompanied all of the solo vocal music of Charles Ives. In 2005, Bruce set the Bill of Rights to music, in the style of William Billings. This work, for chorus and eight instruments, has been performed 35 times. His most recent major work is a dramatic oratorio entitled Circular 14: The Apotheosis of Aristides.

Stephan Kirchgraber, bass, made his debut with the Miami Opera, after studies at the University of Illinois and in Munich, returning to Miami for principal roles in Macbeth, Norma, Turandot, and Alberto Franchetti’s Cristoforo Colombo. In recent seasons, he sang at the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice in Rigoletto and Verdi’s Requiem, and in Fidelio with the Shippensburg Festival Symphony and Chorus. He appeared in Aida with the Opera de Puerto Rico and in Andrea Chenier with Culturarte de Puerto Rico, released on DVD. Mr. Kirchgraber made his European debut in Die Meistersinger at the Festival dei due Mondi in Spoleto, toured with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Pecs in Beethoven’s Ninth, and appeared in Salome at the Opernhaus Zurich. He also appeared with the opera companies of Augusta, Baltimore, Orlando, Palm Beach, Pittsburgh, Tampa, and Utah, and has toured with the New York City Opera. Caberá à autarquia de Carregal do Sal definir o modelo de gestão, o enquadramento técnico e o plano de actividades culturais da Casa do Passal após obras de requalificação interior e musealização.

A Casa do Passal, que pertenceu ao cônsul Aristides de Sousa Mendes, foi entregue à Câmara de Carregal do Sal de forma possibilitar a sua requalificação interior e musealização, anunciou esta quarta-feira a autarquia.
Em comunicado, a autarquia refere que assinou com FASM- Fundação Aristides de Sousa Mendes “um contrato de comodato que viabiliza a candidatura a financiamento e torna possível a realização do projecto de requalificação e musealização da residência do cônsul, que salvou 30 mil vidas do holocausto”.
No âmbito desse contrato, a autarquia ficará responsável pela Casa do Passal (em Cabanas de Viriato), por um período de dez anos, que podem ser prorrogados por sucessivos períodos de dois anos. O objectivo é que, “assumindo o papel de dona da obra, operacionalize a intervenção necessária à requalificação interior e musealização do imóvel, bem como à posterior fruição pelo público em geral”, justifica.

A autarquia lembra que, “depois de avanços e recuos, em que foram surgindo constrangimentos legais de instrução e viabilização da candidatura”, a sua acção, com a aceitação da fundação, “desbloquearam todo o processo”.
“Ao mesmo tempo, permitiram a integração da musealização nesta fase da obra, com um reforço financeiro de mais de meio milhão de euros”, ou seja, “250 mil euros relativos à musealização e incluídos na candidatura, e 300 mil euros que sairão directamente do Orçamento do Estado e que contribuirão para a governabilidade do espaço, nos primeiros três anos”, explica.

Depois de os trabalhos ficarem concluídos, caberá à Câmara de Carregal do Sal definir o modelo de gestão, o enquadramento técnico e o plano de actividades culturais, “bem como a elaboração, aprovação, gestão e execução do respectivo orçamento”, acrescenta.

Em Novembro de 2017, a então directora regional da Cultura do Centro, Celeste Amaro, disse que a Casa do Passal poderia abrir portas ao público em 2019, depois de uma requalificação interior. “Esperemos que possivelmente em 2018 se consiga fazer esta obra: 2018, meados de 2019. Esperemos que, em 2019, estejamos todos na Casa do Passal a inaugurá-la e a abri-la ao público definitivamente, pois há cerca de 50 anos que ela está encerrada ao público”, afirmou, na altura.
A sua convicção foi revelada durante a apresentação dos resultados do concurso público de concepção para a elaboração do projecto de requalificação e musealização da Casa do Passal, uma segunda fase das obras que representava um investimento de 800 mil euros.

Declarada Monumento Nacional em 2011, a Casa do Passal tinha sido alvo de uma primeira
intervenção em 2014, financiada por  DRCC  ao nível das paredes exteriores e da cobertura.
A nova previsão para a inauguração é 2022
DRCC, a autoridade no Patrimonio Nacional, contribui com assistência técnica.

A city square in Jerusalem has been named in memory of the Portuguese diplomat and Holocaust rescuer Aristides de Sousa Mendes, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of his daring rescue in 1940 of thousands of Jews, while serving as the Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, France. This memorial action is thanks to the efforts of the historian Dr. Mordecai Paldiel who serves on the Board of the Sousa Mendes Foundation and who was previously the Director of the Department for the Righteous at Yad Vashem.xxxxx 

A public ceremony marking the unveiling of the street sign had been planned for June 2020 but is postponed to a future date to be determined.  The street sign is in Hebrew, Arabic and English, and reads: “Aristides de Sousa Mendes Square, Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux (France), saved thousands of Jews during the years 1939-40.”

Dr. Paldiel stated, “Sousa Mendes is one of a group of diplomats honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations for helping Jews avoid deportation by granting them visas to other countries. However, he stands out from others as the only one who disobeyed direct and clear orders from his superiors not to grant such visas to Jewish refugees, and was consequently severely punished by immediate dismissal from his diplomatic post. He remains an example of what a difference one person can make in the pursuit of goodness, and therefore, an inspiration to present and future generations. I would like to thank the Jerusalem municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Moshe Lion, for bestowing upon Sousa Mendes a place of honor within this historic city.”

Other anniversary events took place earlier this month. On June 9th, the Portuguese Parliament voted unanimously to induct Sousa Mendes into the National Pantheon. This action was significant, as Sousa Mendes died in 1954 after having been disgraced and punished by the Portuguese government of his time. On June 17th, 2020 Pope Francis invoked the memory of Sousa Mendes and his action to declare that date to be henceforth considered as the “Day of Conscience.”

The Sousa Mendes Foundation was established in 2010 to perpetuate the memory of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and to educate the public about refugees and rescue during the Holocaust. Named “Organization of the Year” in 2012 by The Portuguese Tribune, the Sousa Mendes Foundation is engaged in a worldwide search for families who escaped the Holocaust through Portugal.  The Foundation has a two-fold mission: raising funds for the creation of a Sousa Mendes Museum and Site of Conscience and sponsoring projects that teach the importance of moral courage in a civilized world.

Dr. Ephraim Bueno — whom Rembrandt depicted in two portraits — was born there in 1599.The town of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, in northern Portugal near the border with Spain, expects to open in April a long-planned Jewish  interpretive center, to highlight local Jewish history but also in hopes of drawing tourists.
