The video of Daniel Mattis describing his arrival in Portugal in 1940 was shown today as part of the session on Sousa Mendes in the Sephardic Congress in Guarda, a city in the interior of Portugal, about one hour due east from Cabanas de Viriato.
The video, with subtitles in Portuguese, could be a great addition to the Museu Virtual now and for the real museum later.

He described how the Mattis family caught the last train from Brussels to Paris, how his father was approached by a “red-haired rabbi” in Bordeaux who told him that Sousa Mendes was giving visas. He said they travelled through Spain in a sealed train, which stopped just inside Portugal in Vilar Formoso. Its nearly 2000 passengers piled out were lodged all around, including in farmhouses, while his father and a couple of other men went to Lisbon to make arrangements, coming back with instructions to go to various small towns.
The Mattis family went to Coimbra, where 16-year-old Blanche found a lot of admirers under the watchful eye of 7-year-old Daniel!
He said he connected his family story to Sousa Mendes only upon watching the film Désobeir on French television, but he can’t see more than 10 minutes of the film at any one time, the trauma is still very vivid!
Daniel concluded by saying that “had it not been for the actions of this one person, Sousa Mendes, we would have all been executed. Individuals can make a difference, and one should not be afraid of the consequences, though it’s important to save yourself so you can help save those around you”.
He talked about the important of saving Sousa Mendes’s ancestral home, Casa do Passal, as a shrine to the courage of Sousa Mendes and as a testimony to his action.
