Cordão Humano em volta da Casa de Sousa Mendes

Centenas de amigos de Aristides de Sousa Mendes responderam ao apelo e vieram manifestar o seu apoio à recuperação da Casa do Passal, classificada como Património Nacional em 2011, que está em avançado estado de ruína.

Ouviram Celeste Amaro, Directora Regional de Cultura Centro anunciar que o concurso para as  obras de recuperação foi lançado e os trabalhos irão começar em Maio até Dezembro 2014.


Esta Fase I, que custará cerca de 300.000 Euro, inclui a consolidação das paredes e das colunas interiores, a colocação de um nova cobertura, para além de picar e pintar as paredes exteriores.  Se o orçamento permitir, serão colocadas janelas novas.

(Tratando-se de pelo menos 70 janelas na casa principal e outras 20 janelas na garagem, as janelas já são um grande desafio.)

Entretanto, será preparado e aprovado o projecto para a Fase II, que incluirá a recuperação do interior, e que dependerá de financiamento proveniente do próximo Quadro Comunitário de Apoio.
Celeste Amaro convidou os presentes a voltarem pelo Natal e testemunharem a conclusão da Fase I.

Rogério Mota Abrantes, Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Carregal do Sal, que é Membro do Conselho de Administração da Fundação Aristides de Sousa Mendes reafirmou o empenho do município no projecto.  Ele desafiou os residentes locais que tenham peças do antigo recheio da Casa do Passal que ajudem a preparar uma lista.

Os organizadores agradeceram a presença de todos,  e pediram que assinassem o livro de honra que fará parte do acervo do futuro museu.

E ficou no ar outro desafio:
Se as obras da Casa do Passal não andarem para a frente, a próxima concentração dos amigos de Sousa Mendes será em frente de um outro palácio, o de S. Bento.
Depois dos discursos, a multidão foi-se espalhando pela rua e pelo quintal abaixo, até unirem as mãos no portal de S. Cristóvão em frente à igreja.  Justo a tempo de assistir a "missa e procissão",  com filarmónica.

O próximo grande evento será a colocação de gruas, algures em Maio.

Hundreds of friends Aristides de Sousa Mendes responded to the call and came to lend their support to the recovery of the Casa do Passal , classified as a National Heritage Site in 2011, which is in an advanced state of ruin.

They heard Celeste Amaro,  Regional Director of  Culture for the Center of Portugal, announce  that the tender for the restoration work is underway and that the work will start in May until December 2014.

This Phase I of the works, which will cost around 300,000 Euro , includes the consolidation of the walls and interior columns , pulacement of a new roof , as well as repairing and painting the exterior walls . If budget permits , new windows will ao be placed .

( Note: There are at least70 external windows in the main house and another 20 windows in the garage , so just financing the windows is a major challenge . )

However , the plans for Phase II must also be prepared and approved before the end of 2014.  Phase II  will include the recovery of the interior , and will depend on the availability of funding from the next EU Support Framework . Celeste Amaro invited those present to return at Christmas 2014  and witness the completion of Phase I.

Rogerio Mota Abrantes , Mayor of the Carregal Sal municipality, who is also a Member of the Board of Directors of Fundação Aristides de Sousa Mendes  reaffirmed the commitment of the municipality to the project . He challenged local residents who have pieces  of the   furnishings of  Casa do Passal to help prepare a list so that the interior can also be restored for the museum.

The organizers thanked everyone for their presence , and asked all to sign the guest book that will be part of the library of the future museum.

And another challenge was left in the air:
If the works of the Casa do Passal do not move forward, the next concentration of the friends of Sousa Mendes will be in front of another palace, the palace of S. Bento in Lisbon which houses the Parliament.

After the speeches , the big crowd moved  across the street and the backyard  yard, to join hands in the  St. Christopher  portal in front of the church . Just in time to assist the traditional  " mass and procession " complete with  marching band .

The next big event will be the placement of the construction cranes, sometime in May.
