Persecution, poverty, oblivion

A friend asked what ever happenned to the 56 courageous men who signed the American Declaration of Independence in 1776. For every story of fame and recognition there are several stories of persecution, poverty and oblivion.

This is why it is so important to honor and remmember those who dared to resist and work to change history, as did Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux, France in June 1940.
He was born 125 years ago in Cabanas de Viriato, Portugal, and he is credited with rescuing 30.000 refugees at the onset of World War II, about one third of them jews.
